Creating Space for What Brings You Joy

When we think about creating space, have you ever considered the value of creating space through spending time on your own? For example:

  • Going for a walk without your phone
  • Volunteering
  • Going to the gym
  • Working in the garden
  • Travelling

This space, or the activities you choose, could be something you do just for yourself.

Many people say, “I have no one to go with” or “who will I know there?” But what if we know no one today and choose to do something on our own? Over the years, I have found an amazing sense of freedom and internal strength in showing up on my own and doing things alone.

When people hear this, they often ask, “Could you not go with another person?”

What if I shared that I often do not ask others? I enjoy knowing people to say hi to and acknowledge them, yet I truly enjoy the space of being alone. It brings me a value of joy I have learned to appreciate. So, what brings you joy, and who are you being when you allow yourself to step into that on your own?

The Science of Joy

Creating space for what brings you joy has real, measurable benefits, according to HeartMath research. Studies show that intentionally cultivating positive emotions like joy and appreciation helps shift the body into a state of heart-brain coherence, where the nervous system functions more efficiently and stress is reduced.

In this coherent state, we experience greater emotional balance, mental clarity, and resilience in the face of daily challenges. Making room for joy is not indulgent; it is a practical, science-supported way to support well-being, performance, and overall quality of life.

“Alone time is a gift we give ourselves.” — Author Unknown

This quote captures the idea that time with yourself can become a joyful, intentional practice, one that invites learning to find joy, self-acceptance, and peace within ourselves.
