As we step into 2026, I have been reflecting on what is most essential for leadership and well-being. For me, monitoring my nervous system has become the key to staying calm and grounded.

Most of us know exactly what it feels like when our nervous system is not coherent. You might feel scattered, reactive, or simply “off.” I have been actively practicing “noticing” this state for some time now. I will be honest—it is definitely a practice, and one that does not always come easy. However, I am beginning to see and feel the profound rewards.

The Practice of “Noticing”

The most critical step is simply realizing that you have shifted out of balance. The moment I notice I am no longer coherent—when my nervous system feels off—I stop. I don’t try to push through it. Instead, I follow a simple process:

  1. Pause: Stop the momentum of the stress.
  2. Breathe: I consciously slow down my breathing.
  3. Shift Focus: I sit quietly and take my attention to my “higher mind.”

What is the “Higher Mind”?

This might sound abstract, but for me, it is a very specific physical and mental space. Simply put, it resides just behind my eyes, in the center of my head, and about an inch up.

When I focus my attention there, the shift is almost instant. I immediately feel more in balance. My nervous system calms down, my physical body relaxes, and I regain clarity.

It is a simple tool, but a powerful one. If you are feeling the pace of the new year speeding up, I invite you to try this. Locate that space behind your eyes, slow your breath, and see what happens.

Try it… you might be surprised.
