Growing Your Leadership Team

The evolution and growth of any leadership team is not based on one or two things; it is a strategic approach to ongoing development.

We often hear senior leadership teams looking for development opportunities for their directors and managers. Yet, they often overlook the important need for senior leadership teams to also engage in development opportunities themselves. This happens for many reasons, in particular, the immense amount of responsibility and workload that senior executives typically carry.

This is exactly why senior leaders benefit greatly from development opportunities. Slowing down and taking an opportunity to better understand ourselves and our impact while exploring opportunities for growth is key. Development opportunities should also include understanding stressors, providing tools and techniques for regulating emotions, and building heart-brain coherence for overall well-being.

“We cannot expect our leadership teams to engage in something we are not willing to do ourselves.”

Having a clear pathway at each level of the organization is at the core of succession planning and overall team alignment. Don’t forget to have a plan for those emerging leaders—those who are not yet leaders but who desire to step into this responsibility.

Seek partners that truly care about your team’s growth and development. Find one that provides ongoing coaching, mentorship, and formal education. Link one phase of learning to the next, and don’t forget to have a solid plan from the early emerging leaders right through to the top of the organization’s executive team. This is how you will build alignment at all levels, foster meaningful human connection, and create a common language.
