Over the weekend in the UK, we experienced an amazing amount of sun activity which meant we could see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) from a lot of the country. Our SUN is super active now, something that we don’t all realise and something that we certainly take for granted.
Believe it or not these two images were taken of the same solar eclipse that crossed North America in April 2024. One taken through a standard lens and one with filters that show every element of the energy from the sun whilst still highlighting the details of the moon.
At Change Innovators we understand energy in leadership, we call this New Energy and Old Energy, somewhat like a metaphor of the images above.
The language of energy is common in our organisations when we say, “Where are we putting our energy today?” or “How are you managing your energy? Remember your team feels your energy, what signal are you sending?” or “I feel energised by the conversations we had today”.
We all know that organisational energy is real and is based upon us as human beings and our ability to focus our attention, that’s what makes an organisation and gives it the energy to move forward.
Leadership is about galvanising and enabling this energy to thrive, giving people agency and choice in a safe environment, New Energy. It isn’t about management and process where we tend to control and use the language of “holding people to account for their targets and KPIs”, Old Energy.
New World Leaders are self-aware and open to new ideas. They have taken their own development seriously enough to open their own eyes first, honing their senses to enable them to experience people and opportunities more fully. The have developed the language and tools for evaluating and regulating their own energy for the benefit of self and others.
Just like the enhanced lens that took the beautiful picture of the eclipse above, New Energy leaders enable creativity and demonstrate their ability to lead with love, empathy and compassion because they understand the true possibilities.
Old energy leaders just can’t see the picture as it is intended, because they haven’t taken the time to hone their own senses and sharpen their lenses. They continue to try and convince people that the world is just like the blurred image on the right, holding others back whilst likely being unaware that they are.
