Your Energy Is Not on Sale This Holiday Season

Managing the stress that comes as we approach the New Year can often be challenging. This time of year can produce contagious “busyness” that depletes the very energy we need to enjoy time with those we love.

As difficult as it can be, I encourage you to try extending compassion this holiday season when the stress of others tries to creep in.

Your Brain Is Always Listening

Our nervous system is always paying attention to our emotional state. It’s not about making excuses for other people; it’s about catching our brain’s ability to generate internal narratives that deplete us.

Reframing Stressful Moments

Here are a few questions I ask myself to preserve my energy:

  • When a driver cuts you off: Instead of anger, I try to think: “I hope they make it to the bathroom on time.” Ask yourself: Does this driver deserve the energy I lose by getting angry?
  • When a parent struggles with their child’s behaviour: I remind myself: “I remember when I tried getting a reaction out of my parents like it was a competition. Perhaps that parent is just having a difficult day.”
  • When someone forgets something important: Reflect: “Was it really their intention to forget? Did the stress around them compromise their thinking? Have I ever forgotten something important?”

Your Brain Is Always Listening—What Is It Hearing From You?

In moments where others are caught up in stress, try not to underestimate compassion’s ability to preserve, reserve, and even recharge your energy.

Wishing you a peaceful holiday season.
